How To Sell Comics With NO SETUP FEE

Creators can sell comics as the usual 24 pages book or as a graphic novel 60 to 200 plus pages. When one wants to sell comics as the 24 page book, the comic book would have to come as a series of separate issues. In this way it may be cheaper to produce. You can have a series with 5 issues that come out in different periods of the year. The revenue made from issue #1 can be used to cover the expenses for issue #2. In my opinion this is probably the best way for inexperienced comic book creators to start.

However, if a creator thinks that making a graphic novel is more convenient for him/her to start with, you can go for it under two conditions. You have the funds and a marketing plan. I say this because the marketing is the most strenuous part any creator experiences when producing a product. These days publishing your comic book doesn't have to take fifty dollars out of your pocket if you do the writing and drawing yourself. This method is known as publishing on demand. For first time comic book creators, the difficulty of marketing your comic book can be ten times multiplied.

Creators who successfully sell comics they created are usually those who have experience and background in the producing of comics. It would be easy for someone who is known for working on titles like X-men or Spiderman to come out of Marvel and produce his own comic books or sell his comics. This was the case for Todd McFarlane. McFarlane reached star status in Marvel comics. When he came out of Marvel, he was involved with other illustrators in starting Image comics. Once he published his title called Spawn, it became an almost instant hit because of McFarlane’s popularity. The thing is, not everyone who wants to create comics would get the privilege to work for a giant publisher like Marvel Comics, and also not everyone who works for Marvel will become popular.

How I see it is there are two ways one can break into the comic book industry by creating comics and to sell comics. Both ways involve developing a name for your-self. First, it could be done by integrating oneself with existing publishers and editors, getting hired as staff in an editorial office, and getting published by a smaller publisher. The second way is by independent publishing. Let me add, both ways are extremely difficult, can take years to getting positive results and could cost you big time money.

The encouraging news, there are other methods to get your work to the audience for less money or time. Thanks to the increase in technology, the conventional (going through the big time publishers) way of breaking into the comic book industry to sell comics is not the only way. I’ll explain.

The hardest and biggest hurdle comic book creators have to overcome is marketing their comic book or getting an audience to their comics. Once people know that your comic book exists and like the comic book, to sell comics would be a lot easier for you.

First of all and most important is that when you want to sell comics you have to have a good quality and appealing comic book to sell. Develop an appealing comic book that you know a certain group of people would like.

The next step to sell comics is to market it to those people you made the comic book for. The people whose needs your comic book is meeting. In this way you are almost certain to have a buy. You can do this by creating a website for your comic book and then refer interested people to the website to check your comic book out.

Creating a comic book and marketing it through the internet is now one of the most convenient ways to get your comic book recognized. Like I said before, once your comic book is recognized and liked, to sell comics would be natural.

MAR

Another story of a dorky kid who travels into a mysterious world of adventure and fantasy, but then again what is wrong with that?

Story

Ginta Toramizu is your average 14 year old junior high school loser, he’s short, he’s not very good at school, and all he does is day dream. As luck would happen, Ginta constantly dreams of a fantasy world (and more importantly the fact that he is a hero in this world) until one day his dreams come true and he is sucked into his dream world.
Once inside the dream world Ginta soon realizes that he is now blessed with strength that he once lacked, as he tosses off his dorky glasses and begins to battle Guardian Arms (more on this later) that would kill a normal person. After meeting the Witch Dorothy, Ginta learns about the magical Arms, which can cast spells, transform into guardians and even hold the ability to return him to his home. After following Dorothy around for a while Ginta and Dorothy learn of an ultra powerful arm hidden away in a cave. And after a little bit of fighting Ginta acquires the ultra powerful Arm known as Babbo which is so heavy that only Ginta can use, but can also talk.

When Ginta and Babbo unite the true adventure begins as Ginta begins his search for the Arm that can return him to his home, and Babbo searches to become a human again. The world of Mar is filled with mysterious creatures, dangerous foes and unlikely allies.
The story behind Mar is pretty simple, and anyone who has ever read a fantasy book before can see some obvious similarities between Mar and classic fantasy novels. With that said Mar is an entertaining read for children and would fit perfectly into the hands of a 14 year old book worm. It’s been done before, but who doesn’t enjoy a fantasy story where the loser becomes the hero.

Graphics/Artwork

Mar is drawn in black and white, and mixes several different styles of artwork to deliver the message. Most of the artwork is reminiscent of Full Metal Alchemist, but Mar borrows different styles of artwork to fit the mood. All in all the artwork of Mar is pretty good; however there is nothing extraordinary about the artwork either.

Readability

Mar is a very easy to read graphic novel, and should take an avid book reader about 2 hours to finish. However, I found my self accidentally skipping over cells and other tid bits of information because of the fast pace, so I recommend that you take your time with Mar because there is a lot of information that could be lost if you rush through it. Anyone with a middle school education should be able to read mar from front to back with no problem, which is always nice for those of us who are not avid readers.

Format

Mar is presented in the standard Japanese format (right to left) and thankfully enough comes with a few key reminders for the reader. If you have never read a Manga in the Japanese format, you are missing out. Each Page flows perfectly into the next one, and the format does little to hinder the American reader.

Overall Comment

While the story of Mar is one that has obviously been done before, the story is quite entertaining (especially for its target audience). Older more experience readers might want to stray away from Mar, but fans of the genre might want to check out this quirky adventure series.

Creating Appealing Comics – 4 Must Do Steps

I will first start by asking and answering three questions. Question one; can anyone be involved in creating comics? Yes, anyone can create comics. Question two. Can anyone create an appealing comic book? No, anyone cannot create an appealing comic book. And, can anyone create a comic book that is successful? No, anyone cannot create a successful comic book.

Out of the three questions I asked, I answered no to two of them, which brings me to the whole point of why I’m writing this article. I want to give people four simple and general steps to help begin creating comics that are appealing, and then hopefully successful. We must know that in order for a comic book to become successful, it first has to be appealing to many readers. Let’s now go into the steps.

Step 1

If anyone wants to create comics, his or her motives must be right. Let me tell you why I say this. Creating comics is easy. But, if you want to create a successful comic book, especially if you don’t have any experience in creating comics, it would be very hard. Now, for the people without any background or experience and want to begin creating comics, it is a must for your motives to be right. If you think it is a quick way to make money or that people would automatically like what you produced just because you like it and grandma likes it, it would probably be best you stop, and not waste your time.

Step 2

This is a no-brainer. Get a good comic book idea. For those who can’t think of a decent idea simply think of what you like to do, in terms of sports, (basketball, football, soccer, tennis, karate, or boxing) academics, music, or hobbies. You can think of what you like to watch like: action, comedy, romance, and adventures. You can even think of your values as in: God, family, friends, and so on. If none of these works, try to think about what you think comics are lacking. And maybe what you’ve heard your friends or comic book fans talk about that they would like to see or won’t like to see in comics. Then all you have to do is meet that audience need. Believe me, there are a lot of fresh ideas out there. Once you have a feasible idea, you are ready to move on to step 3.

Step 3

This is where some creators mess up in creating comics. They only think of what they like. See, your comic book is not for you, so you have to think of what you like and make sure there are many others who share those preferences. This is done through research. I know, many people cringe at the sound of that word, but it is a must if you want to create a comic book that appeals to people. Appealing to people is just catering to their needs. This is what Stan Lee did with the creation of Spiderman, Fantastic four and others. When you do your research, you find out whether there is a market for people looking for what you have to offer in your comics. Once you are sure that there are people who are interested in what you have to offer, you have a guaranteed audience and could go forth in creating your comic. Do your research!

Step 4

Develop a great storyline to your theme. Don’t ever depend on the art work alone to keep people glued to your comic book. The art work can attract people but does not get people asking for more.

If you follow these first four steps, you would see whether creating comics is for you or not. If you are successful in these four steps, you are truly on your way to creating an appealing comic book.
